Royal Doulton Sung Ware

Royal Doulton Sung Ware

All SUNG items will be clearly marked Sung in vertical letters.

Developed at Doulton’s Burslem factory during the WWI and named ‘Sung’ as a tribute to the old Chinese master potters, this ‘transmutation’ glaze was popular until about 1940. Subjecting objects to multiple oxygen reductions in the kiln, the Sung glaze was made by coating the rouge flambé glaze or other glazes, with mixtures of metallic oxides allowing a greater range of colours and shades, often combined with lustre effects.
